Iowa voting guide

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Here’s what you need to vote in Iowa.

Check Your Registration

Even if you voted last time, check that you’re still registered. Check your registration

Register by:
  • Online, by mail, or in person: Mon., Oct. 19
  • In person at early voting: Mon., Nov. 2
  • At your polling place: Tues., Nov. 3

Missed it? You can register and vote on Election Day at your polling place. Bring ID and proof of where you live.

Key Dates

  • Early in-person voting begins; mail ballots start going out

Your Voting Checklist

  • Vote early in person from Wed., Oct. 14 to Mon., Nov. 2.
  • Vote by mail. Any voter can vote by mail.

  • Bring the right ID. You must show one of these IDs to vote in person.

    No ID? You can vote a provisional ballot and show ID by Nov. 9. See the official ID rules
  • Review your sample ballot before you go.
  • Have a past conviction?
    • For most felonies, your right to vote comes back once you finish your full sentence, including probation or parole.
    • You then need to register again.
    • If you were convicted of murder or another killing, you must ask the governor to get it back.

Ballot measures

    Yes means raising income tax rates would need two-thirds of lawmakers in each chamber (67 of 100 House members and 34 of 50 senators).
    No means no change. A simple majority of lawmakers can still pass income tax increases.
