Kentucky voting guide

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Here’s what you need to vote in Kentucky.

Check Your Registration

Even if you voted last time, check that you’re still registered. Check your registration

Register by:
  • Online, by mail, or in person: Mon., Oct. 5

Key Dates

  • Last day to register (online by 4 p.m.; mail postmarked; in person by close of business)
  • Last day to request a mail ballot online (11:59 p.m. Eastern)
  • Excused in-person absentee voting begins (Oct. 21–23, 26–28; reason required)
  • Last day to cancel a mail ballot and vote in person instead
  • Excused in-person absentee voting ends
  • No-excuse early in-person voting begins
  • No-excuse early in-person voting ends
  • Election Day: polls 6 a.m.–6 p.m.; mail ballots must be received by 6 p.m.
  • Counties certify results to the Secretary of State (noon); recanvass request deadline (4 p.m.)
  • State Board of Elections certifies results (deadline)

Your Voting Checklist

  • Vote early in person from Thurs., Oct. 29 to Sat., Oct. 31.
  • Vote by mail. You can vote by mail if you are:
    • Out of your county on Election Day and all early voting days
    • Can't get to the polls due to age, disability, or illness
    • Student living away from your county
    • Military or living overseas
    • Living out of state for now
    • In jail but not convicted
    • In the state address confidentiality program
    • Medical emergency within 14 days of the election

  • Vote on Election Day, Tues., Nov. 3, 6 a.m.–6 p.m. local time. Find your polling place
  • Bring the right ID. You must show a photo ID with your name to vote in person.

    No ID? You can sign a form saying why and show another ID, like a card with your name and photo. See the official ID rules
  • Review your sample ballot before you go.
  • Have a past conviction?
    • For most nonviolent Kentucky felonies, your right to vote comes back once you finish your sentence.
    • For violent crimes or federal or out-of-state felonies, you must ask the governor.
    • Check at civilrightsrestoration.ky.gov, then register to vote.

Ballot measures

  • Constitutional Amendment 1: Limits on governor's pardons. Would bar the governor from granting pardons or commuting sentences from 60 days before a governor's election until the new term starts (the fifth Tuesday after the election).
    Yes means the governor could not pardon people or shorten sentences during roughly the last few months of a term around a governor's election.
    No means no change. The governor keeps the power to pardon and commute sentences at any time (except in impeachment cases).
