Maine voting guide

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Here’s what you need to vote in Maine.

Check Your Registration

Even if you voted last time, check that you’re still registered. Check your registration

Register by:
  • Online or by mail: Tues., Oct. 13
  • At the BMV: Tues., Oct. 27
  • In person at your town office: Tues., Nov. 3

Missed it? You can register and vote on Election Day at your town office or polling place. Bring ID and proof of where you live.

Key Dates

  • In-person absentee (early) voting available at town and city clerk offices (ballots arrive 30 days before Election Day; hours vary)
  • Last day to register online (5 p.m.) or by mail (received)
  • Last day to register at the BMV; Postal Service-suggested last day to mail back an absentee ballot
  • Last day to request an absentee ballot or vote absentee in person at the clerk's office
  • Election Day: same-day registration available; polls close and absentee ballots due by 8 p.m.; last chance to fix (cure) an absentee envelope problem

  • Vote early in person from Mon., Oct. 5 to Thurs., Oct. 29.
  • Vote by mail. Any voter can vote by mail.

    Problem with your ballot? Your town clerk will contact you, and you can fix it in person by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Track your ballot
  • Vote on Election Day, Tues., Nov. 3, Polls open between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. depending on the town, and all close at 8 p.m. Find your polling place
  • Bring the right ID. Most voters don't need to show ID. You only need ID if you are registering for the first time. If you are registering and have no ID, you can still cast a challenged ballot. See the official ID rules
  • Review your sample ballot before you go.
  • Have a past conviction?
    • In Maine, you never lose your right to vote because of a conviction, even while in prison.
