What was Dobbs v. Jackson?

Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization is the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal constitutional right to abortion. It returned abortion law to the states, many of which quickly banned or sharply restricted the procedure.

The case challenged a 2018 Mississippi law banning most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Jackson Women's Health Organization was the last abortion clinic in the state. On June 24, 2022, the Court upheld the Mississippi law 6 to 3 and voted 5 to 4 to overrule Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the Constitution makes no reference to abortion.

The effects were immediate. Trigger laws took effect in several states, and clinics closed across the South and Midwest. By mid-2026, 13 states enforced total abortion bans, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

The impact is not evenly shared. Mississippi, where the case began, has the highest share of Black residents of any state and some of the worst maternal health outcomes. Reproductive justice groups argue that the ruling falls hardest on Black, Latina and low-income people, who are least able to travel for care.
