Why classrooms

The Anti-Racism Daily has always ended the same way: with something you can actually do.

Over the years, readers of this newsletter have raised more than $2.5M for causes — bail funds, mutual aid networks, legal defense, grassroots organizers. It worked because the ask was always specific and the money always went somewhere you could point at.

The referral program works the same way. Public school teachers spend their own money on their own classrooms every year, disproportionately in the schools with the least. DonorsChoose lets us fund a specific project at a specific school — books, supplies, a field trip — instead of sending money into the abstract.

So when you bring someone into this newsletter, two things happen: one more person gets the daily practice in their inbox, and one classroom gets something it asked for.

The details

  • For every new subscriber you refer, we donate $1 to our partner cause in your name.
  • Donations are made quarterly. Our partner rotates by season; DonorsChoose is our partner for October–December 2026.
  • ARD makes the donation, so it costs you nothing, and it isn’t tax-deductible for you.
  • There’s a $100 cap per person per year, so the program stays sustainable.
  • At 5, 10 and 25 referrals you become an ARD Advocate, ARD Champion and ARD Changemaker. Changemakers are featured on our Share page.

What counts as a referral

  • Someone new subscribes through your link and confirms their email. Your count updates a few minutes after they confirm.
  • People who were already subscribed, duplicate or fake addresses, and signing yourself up don’t count.
